2ND YEAR, ANIMATION SKILLS PROJECT: PUSH, PULL AND LIFT AND ANIMAL MOTION

Updated: May 8, 2023

Animation exercise from workshop where I had top do an animation of a character pushing, pulling and lifting something.

SQUIRREL ANIMATION:

For this project I simply had to do an animation of an animal running, walking and completing and obstacle course. However the animal picked had to be one with four legs. I chose the squirrel, and honestly, I picked it because I find them adorable and I thought it would be fun animating one. Their moves are often quick and springy and I thought it would be fun to to play around with that and try and mirror that in an animation. Also, I once again wanted to push my limits, given that I am trash at drawing animals and that I thought animating the lively, busy movements of a squirrel would be the perfect challenge.

Down bellow are some imagery of squirrel bones and their anatomy structure that I used to help in having an understanding of their general physique. I had to use this since I am not familiar with drawing animals and I am honestly not good at it at all, so these pictures aided a lot in my drawing of the squirrel at the very least.

From my observation, their bodies when simplified look quite similar to that of a rat/rodent. I'm not sure but maybe they might be part of the rodent species (Just a thought I took note of).

Reference Video Used For Help and Inspiration

The video above was used as a reference, and I picked up on the leg movements of the squirrel, realising that their arms and legs pretty much move in sync when they walk around.

SQUIRREL WALK ANIMATION (TV PAINT)

On a personal note, I really don't like my walk animation. There was a lack of life in it and it did not mirror the spring-like movement in the squirrels body. To be honest I could've done so much better and polished my craft. I did find it difficult to do a perfect walk for the squirrel, because they generally do move quite quickly and look like they are running/ rushing all the time.

SQUIRREL RUN ANIMATION (TV PAINT)

After the massive flop and disappointment of a walk sequence, I took some time to watch more squirrel videos to get a better idea on how to better my animation on their movements. I wouldn't call my next attempt perfect, but I would definitely agree that it looks better than my last piece, so I now present my squirrel run animation.

OBSTACLE COURSE VIDEOS FOR INSPIRATION

SQUIRREL OBSTACLE COURSE ANIMATION (STOP MOTION AND CAPCUT)

In all honesty, I enjoyed these projects and I found them fun to take part in. I enjoyed creating my characters for the push, pull and lift sequence and I really enjoyed designing my squirrel for the animal run sequence. I particularly had fun with the obstacle course, although from my critique I would say I could have made the obstacle course more challenging for my animal.

Anyways, that's all for today ladies and gentlemen, thank you for your support, I'll see you in my next upload, and now, 'go and click something else.'
