1st Term: Live Action Drawing Lesson: Boxing Sketches

This weeks Thursday we had a male model pose for us this time. The drawing theme was more character based as we had the model wear boxing gloves and do various poses for us pertaining to the character he was trying to portray. The variety of his poses ranged from victorious, content, tired and defeated; which I found really relevant for the character of a boxer, as boxing itself can be a very draining and competitive sport for the physically and mentally strong. As usual, we did our sixty second/ one minute quick sketch exercise to start off, and later ventured into longer drawing sessions ranging from five minutes etc.

The more detailed image to the left is the five minute poses.

After a short break our tutor tried a different excise with us, instructing that this time we make little thumbnails of the sketches, similar to what is seen in a story board. (For those who don't know what a story board is they are a little similar to a comic strip. They give a clear visual story and work together as a set, highlighting key moments and movements that are to be in a film. They are important tools in early stages of film production and are used by production companies to show clients or other members of the team what the finished animation/ film will look like.) Our Tutor timed us for seven minutes for each pose given and I had each of my little thumbnail sketches put in a box before I started. We were also advised to add in the background of the character portrayed, the background/ curtains could have been presented as contrasting colors giving the character more definition and feeling. I found this particular exercise quite fun and simple. To be honest I felt like this was the part where I put the least effort into drawing a picture, it was like a quick job for me because the image did not have to be that big and I could limit what was in my picture because of the restriction of the box drawn around it.

Seven Minute Thumbnail Sketches

Once that exercise was done we continued on our usual route of the lesson and ended it by doing our usual twenty minute pose sketches. Two were able to be done in this time and we were dismissed from class after. Here below are the two complete sketches from the twenty minute pose session.
