On the first day back after Christmas break (Jan 10th 2022), another small project was handed out. For this project we have to create a 30 second sound composition inspired by a randomly selected title. The soundscape environment can be made from a range of image. By reversing the usual process and creating the sound track first, I will be forced to avoid the custom of 'decorating' the the picture with sound and give careful consideration to the way images compliment sound.
My random chosen topic was called Velvet Larynx, and I plan to mimic the sound of water and make use of echoes for this soundscape. Although it will be awkward, most sounds will be made by my voice, which I find particularly useful for this soundscape theme since I found out that the larynx is the voicebox and contains two vocal cords that make ones voice. This really pushed me to get as creative as possible with my own voice. The setting I wanted to envision and make through sound was some form of cave near the a waterfall, while mysterious sounds hummed in the background. The reason I envisioned a cave was because I seemed to have the constant habit of comparing the throat to a dark and eerie cave. I imagine what it would sound like as one breaths, speaks, hums, wheezes, and it all makes me imagine a tunnel of water or cave of some sort.
Source Of My Inspiration
My random inspiration for the creation of this soundscape was actually from a part of western African culture and the deity known as Mami Wata. Mami Wata is often shown to be a beautiful mermaid or a woman dancing with serpents. In some cases they can reveal themselves as male. Non the less they are always said to be good looking. Still today this popular deity is still met with praises and respect by some people in parts of Africa and the Carribean. This deity despite being respected by some, now currently stands between the line of being viewed as helpful or evil depending on peoples judgments. By some people in Africa she is said to be loving and rewards those who appreciate her with wealth and prosperity, and on the other hand some say that she is evil and takes people under the water with her; it has even gone as far as people claiming that they have seen a Mami Wata spirit or give detailed stories of experiences of being taken by one and returned. Often those who say they were taken by her are said to have come back wiser with a better spiritual understanding. But who knows, the earth is forever a mystery and only five percent of the ocean has been discovered, I'll leave the rest to your imagination.
In the end I was heavily inspired by these ideas of mystical water creatures and particularly the siren, and how they used their voices to lure sailors to crash their ships. I wanted this environment to sound as eerie as possible and for the thoughts of the unknown to drift as one listened.

RECORDINGS FOR VELVET LARYNX SOUNDSCAPE
I might remove some of the sounds here for the original soundscape since I have more recordings than I need, but non the less here are a few of the sounds I recorded for this project.
With all that being said and done I will take my leave. Thank you for your support I really appreciate it. Make sure to click the heart if you enjoyed this post, I'll see you all in my next upload and now, go and click something else.
