MIXED MEDIA ANIMATION GROUP PROJECT

Updated: May 8, 2023

For this project, animation students had to team up with fashion students to create a form of mixed media animation including textile material. Three animation students would be teamed up with one fashion student and would be expected to make a twenty second animation in a week. Along with that, each group was given a box with random objects in it, which we were to use within our animation.

In my groups box we got a toy ship, a packet of buttons, pins and a mini steel bowl. We were all unsure of what to do at first, but we all knew we wanted to create an animation involving some form of sea monster. After booking one of the stop motion rooms for a week, we began to get to work.

CREATING THE MONSTER:

I started working early, creating the sea monster that would attempt to sink the ship. I initially wanted to create a giant octopus, in reference to the mythological sea creature the Kraken.

However when I put the material together he did not look like an octopus. In the end I put a silk sheet over his head and made him a giant jellyfish with buttons for eyes, although I don't even think that was obvious. None the less, the sea monster was done.

TEAMWORK:

Next was to set the scene for that animation. While I was sewing away creating the giant jellyfish monster, the rest of the team worked on creating the scenery and even began working on the stop motion animation before I could join. They put pieces of blue cloth down for ocean water and had the cloth move fluidly as if it were a liquid for the animation. I found it quite impressive to be honest, especially since most of what I was doing was moving the clouds across the sky for each picture frame.

It took me a while to notice this but after working on the animation for a while I noticed three little clay men in the boat. It turned out my team mate Ellis created them. I thought they were cute and made the animation much more interesting.

RESULT:

And that is all for today ladies and gentlemen, see you in my next upload, Happy New Year, and now 'Go and click something else.'
